For three days during Carnival, the small city of Ivrea turns its main squares into an actual battlefield - nine teams on foot pelt costumed cart-riders (representing a medieval tyrant's guard) with real oranges, hundreds of tons of them, in a food fight that reenacts a local uprising legend. Wear the red liberty cap if you don't want to be a target, and expect to find orange pulp in your hair for days after.
