Key West's answer to Mardi Gras started in 1979 as a scrappy idea to fill hotel rooms in the off-season and grew into ten days of body paint, elaborate handmade floats, and a genuinely anything-goes parade down Duval Street. It's proudly, unapologetically grown-up - not a family event - and the island economy basically runs on it every October.
