Before sunrise on February 2nd, a top-hatted club of local dignitaries pulls a groundhog named Phil from a stump on Gobbler's Knob and announces, with total ceremonial seriousness, whether he's seen his shadow - and therefore whether winter has six more weeks left in it. It's been running since 1887, it's completely earnest, and somehow that's the whole charm.
